Table of contents for Chicken Coop
Today we have some build pictures to show you of the chicken coop. We have been working really hard on it for the last week and have made a lot of progress. Also, we have pictures of the chicks for you to check out!
The one part of our design that we feel needs to be changed is the roof. Is is going to be too complicated to frame up the double layer polycarbonate roof and still make it water tight. Also, the style does not match the house at all. We are thinking that a standard wood frame roof with shingles that matches the house would be best for this application.

Here is an image of our chickens. Awe aren’t they cute! Don’t worry, they will be little fertilizer factories shortly
We ordered straight run buff laced polish chicks. The hatchery would not sell sexed birds of this breed. We plan on eating or selling the roosters on craigslist as soon as they start to crow.

These are the concrete deck blocks we used as a foundation for the columns. We dug a hole so that the top of the block would be flush with the existing ground. You will also notice our string/guide wires that are in a rectangular form. The intersection of the string points are where the blocks were to be placed.

Here the columns and horizontal framing for the lower portion of the coop has been completed. The posts on one side are taller than the posts on the other to give the roof a nice slope. This slope is actually a little greater than we were planning, but only realized it after the columns were in place. Whoops, we don’t think the end product will be too terrible. Also of note, the boards that are laying on the ground and the columns are pressure treated lumber. This is because it will last longer in our rainy climate.

We used a single sheet or oriented strand board (OSB) for the coop floor. Notches were cut around the columns. The edge of the OSB rests completely on the horizontal 2×4 members for support. There is a cross brace below the OSB for greater support to the floor as well about mid span of the horizontal framing.
Well, that is all that we have for you right now. The weather here has been raining like crazy and we hope to have some more build pictures for you soon.
take care everyone!
