Chicken Coop Build 3

Chicken Coop

Hey everyone! We have some more build pictures of the chicken coop for you guys.

In the last week, we have put some oriented strand board on the sides of the coop for something to mount the siding to. We have also put the roof on in addition to 2 doors. The chickens are actually living in the coop right now :)

In other news: last weekend we ran the annual Race for the Roses in Portland! We ran ten minute miles during the 10K portion of the race. Want to see our results, here is link: Race for the Roses 2010 Results. You can search for Stan’s bib # 5367, or my bib # 5366.

All in all we have been pretty busy. We also planted some crops in the garden. Mostly the cold weather crops like broccoli and cauliflower have been started. We don’t have pictures of this yet simply because they have not sprouted yet.

After completing the framing, we put oriented strand board  (OSB) onto the framing to give the coop rigidity and provide something to nail the future siding onto. We left holes for all the doors that we wanted to be available to us later.

Here the roof joists (2×4 at approximately 24 inches on center) have been added. The interior joists have been notched to provide the proper angle of joist. Exterior joists are simply screwed into the side of the 4×4 column. The storage area has slightly different roofing since we did not want any air gaps that would lend itself to providing an access for rodents. You can also see we have added a perch in the chicken coop area.

Here we have placed the OSB on a portion of the roof. We are using the OSB as decking material for the roof which will provide a structure to nail shingles onto. The trim boards have also been added to the exterior edge of the roof to provide a slight (4inch) overhang to the roof.

The shingles have been added to the roof. Keep in mind that we put metal flashing under the shingles so that water would not drip onto the OSB and go underneath the shingles on the edges. We also added the doors to the chicken coop section. You can see that the larger cleaning door in this image has been attached.

Lastly, the chickens are at home! They are seen here just a few minutes after being put in the new portion of the coop. They are starting to get their adult feather coming in :)

That’s it for this week. Stay Sustainable
