Aeroponics First Planting Progress Day 33

Aeroponics Plant Progress, Rain Water Collection / 1 Comment

We’ve been away for awhile! I’m sure you noticed. We had a couple very good reasons for this. Mainly, we are attempting to buy a house, get moved, and get ready for Stan to start classes again all at the same time. It’s been sort of hectic and as a result, our blog has suffered. Sorry.

In other news, we have a video of our rainwater collection system working now. We’ve been using it to filter the water for our espresso machine and our three fish tanks. The system works well but we have targeted a couple areas for improvement with our increased knowledge in this subject area. Here’s the video:

And now, as the title of the post indicates, we have a couple progress pictures of our one surviving pea plant. He’s not doing as well as we had hoped but he’s not dead yet! Our best guess as to why he’s not doing so well, a lack of bright light. We have him on a west-facing window that doesn’t really get much direct sunlight–zero hours per day to be exact–so he hasn’t been growing as well as he could have. On the other hand, the pea plants roots have increased in size drastically, almost out of the frame of picture we can take with our camera. The pea plant is also about an inch tall now.

We’ve been working on our LED lighting system–got a prototype 5 watt setup but this isn’t bright enough by a long shot, though it is blinding–and we hope to have some prototype boards going to get some more wattage that we can then place over our lone surviving pea plant. You remember the bottle with a cotton ball that we used to start some chives? Well this set up was placed under our LED setup and the chives withered and died. We think that lights are not powerful enough as we have already stated. Time will tell as we plan to experiment more with this.

Here are some pictures:

Here is our pea plant, growing slowly but steadily. It is about an inch tall now.

You can see that the roots have also increased drastically in length.

And just for shits and giggles, here is a video of our very happy discuss fish :)

That’s all for now, take care!
