We have recently been asked where a green home can be purchased or built by a reader. So, we decided to try to find the best resources possible and post them for everyone to use. This is a list of web pages we came up with:
- Project Green Build
This is a non profit organization that seeks to gain recognition and grow demand for green built homes. - USGBC (US Green Building Council) is a larger non profit organization that is composed of more than 15,000 organizations all working toward green built homes. You can learn about LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating systems here.
- Sustainable Homes, Inc. this site is located in Texas and they have a nice gallery of sustainable homes that have already been built.
- Green and Sustainable Homes contains information for homeowners on alternative energy solutions to architecture.
- Easy Dome offers dome style home plans as seen in Inhabitat
- GreenHomesForSale has a list of homes that are sustainable by state as well as many resources for building with green materials.
- Home Depot also offers green solutions for your home if you are planning a remodel.
- Wolseley offers information on sustainable building products
- JETSON GREEN has some good articles on green build homes.
And here are a few books we found that might be of interest:
- The Northwest Green Home Primer
- Green Beginnings: The Story of How We Built Our Green & Sustainable Home
Hopefully these links will get you some resources for starting the hunt for a green and sustainable home. Many of them simply offer available products, but knowing what is available is only going to help make your decisions better. Did we forget something? Feel free to add it in the comments.
Note: It was later mentioned to us that a new site will be launched that focuses on building green homes. They are GreenovationTV, and will be launching their site on April 22, 2009, which happens to appropriately be Earth Day.
Take Care
